Hope everyone had a good holiday~ We however had an unfortunate event on Christmas Day.
We have been staying in Atlanta, GA on and off for the past month or so for work. We thought since there is hotel close to the client, we decided to store the RV at a storage place south of Atlanta.
Everything seemed to be fine. We thought as a large city, Atlanta might not be the safest place to store the RV, but our experience with people here to far has been very pleasant.
Yesterday, when we went to get the mountain bikes out of the RV to go on a bike ride, we found out that the scooter was stolen. Yes, my baby 2006 Piaggio Fly 150 was taken from me. And there were signs of the thief trying to force open the RV front door. But, fortunately, the lock was strong and they did not get in.
I was never one who gets attached to materials… but the fact that the scooter was stolen made me extremely mad. I had no idea how much I loved the scooter till it was gone.
You can see the damage below… The strapped were cut so they can get the scooter off the rack.
After filing the police report with the Clayton County Police, and talked to the lady who runs the storage property, it turns out we were not the only victim to this. There are four locked storage unit on the property raided and it looks like another RV parked in the lot was cleared of their storage compartments.
My blood pressure must have went off the roof, because I was feeling dizzy and had a horrible headache rest of the day.
We were afraid that the thief will try to come back with different equipment to break in, so we decided to check out of the hotel and get ourselves in a RV park that is relatively close to the client site, so we can finish our work here for the remainder of December.
I think we have learned our lesson and we will not leave the RV in storage again. The only reason we did this was the concern of it being cold and thought it would be good to leave it winterized for the cold months.
Next month we will be in Minneapolis area and camping at an RV Resort there. It will be cold, but I think I will be much happier knowing that the RV will be safe.
Since we did not have the comprehensive insurance policy on the scooter, the insurance company won’t cover anything. So $4K is gone, just like that. To make things harder for whoever stole it and trying to sell it. I emailed Piaggio and warn them about if someone trying to get a key ordered for the Fly 150 with our VIN number, to not issue one, because it was stolen from us. I also sent info to a local newspaper and hoping they will put the information out there and warn locals about the stolen bike.
I also thought about letting local bike/motor workshops know about it, so they can keep an eye out for me.
I found there are two places you can register your stolen scooter so potential buyers can check if they are buying a stolen bike.
I entered my info there and hope that some day somene will let me know that they found my baby scooter.
