Review: Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Color – Light Intense Auburn R3

Posted by JacQ

Garnier Nutrisse Permanent Hair Color – Ultra Color: Light Intense Auburn R3Jeremy has been encouraging me to dye my hair red. And I have been curious about how red hair looks on me. So I started looking for potential DIY hair dye from stores.

We went to Fry’s last week for grocery shopping and I saw the Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Color – Light Intense Auburn R3. It states that it is designed specifically for naturally dark color hair.

Like most Asians, my hair is really dark and thick in volume. My hair is medium in texture but it does not really take in color very well. So I normally have to leave hair dye in for 2+ hours to get some color… which is really bad for my hair.

Jeremy was promoting me to try it, so we got two boxes since from previous experience I need to use double or sometimes triple the amount for the amount of hair I have plus the length. There was even one time I used two boxes and needed a third so Jeremy had to run out and get me another box.

I had already tried to lighten my hair color with Kao Prettia Soft Bubble Hair Color in Sweet Pink a few days ago, and ended up not really liking the color too much. It ended up looking a little too flat against my complexion, so I am looking forward to give it a little more boost.

This series is exclusively designed for naturally dark hair people to get a intense red color. It does not work on hair that has been colored to a black or dark brown shade. Also not recommended for predominantly gray hair.

The mixing of the chemical is pretty standard, easy to follow instruction and a pretty good quality set of latex gloves, not the thin, cheap plastic ones.

As soon as I saw the main bottle, I know I needed a second box so I was glad we got two. One box was enough to cover about 2/3 of my hair. Since I have already lighten my hair to more of a medium brown, the red really showed through, almost exactly like they showed on the box. I had several highlights from some bleaching done last year, so I ended up with some really bright red highlights, which was a happy accident.

I think a combination of this product designed specifically for dark hair and I have already lighten my hair a little a few days ago, helped with the really impressive result for just one hour of coloring time.

It was really messy doing this by myself, it would have been much easier to have this done by Jeremy or a friend. It also had a strong smell, so some people might not like that.

It took me about 15 – 20 minutes to rinse the chemical out of my hair and it still was not completely clear… I assume that is what it takes to get this intense red for dark hair. The conditioner that came with it was not bad, but it definitely left my hair much healthier compared to the Kao hair dye.

I highly recommend this to my fellow dark hair peeps, but I don’t know how the color would fade and how long the color will last. So I am curious to find out.

Here are the before and after photos.

I am so happy that you posted this review. I recently decided that I wanted to dye my hair red. My hair is so dark that it is almost black and stubborn when it comes to coloring. I too have to leave the color on longer to get any color change. I came across this brand of color claiming to work on dark hair, but I needed to see proof. I am so glad you posted pictures. Before and after. I would have normally skipped over the color that you used thinking that it wasn’t the shade I needed to get the shade I wanted (clear as mud right?). But this blended with your natural color and allowed your natural color to come through and it is actually the EXACT color I was looking for. Your hair looks gorgeous!!

so my natural hair color is brown and about 10 months ago i dyed it darkbrown and ive dyed it once more to try and wash the black off with a chocolate red but only my roots are somewhat colored, do you think this product will work?

    Yessica,

This product won’t work as well on your hair since you have dyed it darkbrown before. It is meant to be used on naturally dark hair. So I am not 100% if the red will stick in your hair as well as it should…

    Good luck

    Hi Katie,

I am not 100% sure how this will work on your hair. I think it is best that you email or contact the staff at Garnier and tell them what kind of hair dye you used six months back and they could probably tell you whether it will work for you.

    Thanks,

    Hi Kailey,

It lasted me about 1.5 months. It seems to wash out quite a bit every time I shampoo my hair. But it fades into a nice medium brown with still a little bit of red in my hair. Thanks for stopping by!

Hi! my hair is naturally black but I dyed it a light brown a week ago and it looks like your before picture. if I use this do you think it will work?

I think it will work if you leave the dye in for a long time like I did. But it won’t last very long, only like 1-2 months at most for the intense red and then it will leave you with more of a reddish brown. In my opinion…

I tried this product today – left it on for 25 mins. I have black hair. It didnt do anything to my black hair but the brown streaks in my hair have a fabulous red in it now.

So I would recommend this product to others with dark hair but if you have black hair – you will need to have some bleached highlights in your hair 1st for the color to show through.

Thanks for sharing your experience Liz! You might be right. My hair turned out to be red probably because I had already lighten my hair by coloring it medium brown from my original black hair.

    Hi Mina,

R3 is a permanent color. I have not tried R2 so I won’t be able to give you advise on which one to go with. Sorry~

    Hi Isha,

Thanks for writing. It took about 65 minutes for me to get the color on my hair.
That is normally how long I leave colors on my hair since it takes a long time for my
    hair to take color.

    Hope this helps.

I dyed my hair brown black about two months ago, and my natural hair color is a medium brown, the black brown is fading but my hair is still dark. I’ve debated going to a salon to get the red but that would be expensive. I came across this product today and I love the color. Im just hoping I will get this color when I dye it? Or should I wait a bit more for the black brown to fade?

    Hi Summer,

The box mentioned that this won’t work as well on hairs that is dyed darker. So I would recommend waiting a little longer for the brown to fade. Sorry, I am really not an expert on this product. But I think this product works best on hair that is virgin or without black or dark color dye in it.

    Good luck!

Thank you for posting this review with before and after pictures.  Your photos and detailed explanation are both really helpful for me.  I’ve been considering dyeing my hair at home, but since I have very dark brown, almost black hair, I’m looking for a color that will actually make a difference.  I am so glad I came across your review!  And your color turned out really nice.

Thanks Jasmine. I was looking online for some before and after photos for this product before I used it and really had no luck, so I figured if I post mine, it will be helpful for others. I am glad you found my post helpful. ;)

Hi! I have naturally black hair that I dyed with Henna a few days ago, the Henna sorta shows up in the sunlight. I really wanted to dye my hair with this. Do you think it is safe? Also, how long should I keep it on my head? Thanks <3

Hi there, I am not familiar with coloring hair using Henna, so I can’t really advise you on that. I highly recommend you contacting the company directly to find out if it is safe. I left it in my hair for about one hour, so I assume you could get similar result with one hour.

I just bought this hair dye (same color, too) and it says to not use over henna compounded hair. Not sure what that means or how long you have to wait. But that’s what it says on the side panel. I plan on using this sometime this weekend or upcoming week. I was so excited I only bought one box when I will definitely need 2 or 3. I’ll have to go back.

No where on the box does it say that this is “hair dye”. There is no such thing. This is a semi-permanent colour, and it cannot lighten your own hair, only adds colour to whatever you have. Since you had lightened your hair somewhat, and had the bleached streaks in it, then the red shows up. But for someone with black hair, this would be a waste of time. It tends to wash out quickly, since it is a surface colour, and does not penetrate into the hair shaft itself.

Hey, your post has been really helpful! I’m planning on only dyeing the ends of my hair using this product. You said it’d only last about 1-2 months but I wash my hair everyday so do you think it’d last for a shorter time?

    Hi Maggie,

The vibrant red will wash out quickly if you wash your hair every day.

    Hairbender,

Thank you for your insight. I did lighten my hair so the intensity of the hair color definitely is more vibrant than if I just do it with virgin black hair. However, it did penetrate into my hair shaft. I have been doing the “no-poo” method and almost all previously done colors has came out, but you can still see traces of red in my hair.

my extensions are Black.  I’ve tried bleaching them before and they didn’t change what so ever.  I really want to go red.  I dyed them ‘natural black” about 2 years ago.  And I want to know if this would work with black hair… That has been dyed.  /:

    Hi Angel,

You will probably have to contact the manufacturer of your extensions to see what you can do to color them. I am pretty sure if your hair was dyed black, this won’t work on your hair.
